Washington Sports Fans Are Becoming More Valuable, Not Just More Engaged

For sponsors, the value of winning isn’t always measured by how many new fans show up, but by how much more invested existing fans become.
Washington has emerged as not only one of the West region's most compelling sports markets, but one of the strongest sports states in the country, ranking ninth in SponsorPulse's most recent U.S. Sports Fandom State Rankings.
In our broader West region fanbase analysis, the state stood out for its combination of established professional franchises, passionate supporters, and growing fan momentum. At the centre of that story are the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and MLB’s Seattle Mariners.
Heading into the first half of 2026, both franchises had given fans plenty to rally around. The Seahawks captured their second Super Bowl championship, while the Mariners entered the season coming off a campaign that left them just one win shy of their first World Series appearance.
Conventional wisdom suggests winning should automatically lead to higher engagement and larger fanbases, however, the data tells a more nuanced story. While on-field success doesn’t always translate into greater overall engagement, it often strengthens the emotional connection existing fans have with their teams. Those shifts in intensity, passion, and purchase consideration can create sponsorship opportunities that are every bit as valuable as growth in reach or engagement.
Key Takeaways
Washington ranks ninth in SponsorPulse's U.S. Sports Fandom State Rankings.
The Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners both saw stronger emotional fan metrics despite already having highly engaged fanbases.
Fan Intensity, Passion, Excitement, Momentum, and Purchase Consideration all increased across key properties.
Washington's sports ecosystem extends beyond the Seahawks and Mariners, with growth across the Kraken, Sounders, and Storm.
Sponsors may benefit more from deeper fan commitment than from fanbase growth alone.
The Seahawks: A Mature Fanbase Growing Deeper
The Seattle Seahawks remain Washington's premier sports property, where 70% of the state’s general population have engaged with the team, according to SponsorPulse's proprietary database. Seahawks fans are already among the most engaged audiences in the state, but that figure declined slightly from 73% the previous year despite the franchise delivering a Super Bowl championship.
At first glance, that might seem counterintuitive. However, a deeper look at the emotional and behavioural metrics tells a very different story.
By delivering a championship, Excitement amongst engaged Seahawks fans grew 21% in the first half of 2026, compared to 2025, to where two-thirds of engaged fans say the team creates an emotional connection. Intensity of engaged fans also increased by 5%, meaning more fans are engaging on a weekly basis, while Momentum rose by 11% as more fans indicated their engagement levels would increase in the future. As well, Passion grew to where nearly a third of engaged fans identify as passionate fans. Finally, consideration when it comes to purchase also grew to where one-in-four engaged Seahawks fans would consider purchasing a product, brand or service if it were to sponsor the team.
For brands, those numbers matter.
Once a team reaches extremely high levels of awareness and engagement, additional growth often becomes difficult. Championships don't always create more fans. Instead, they strengthen existing fan relationships, and for the Seahawks, their Super Bowl victory has deepened emotional investment.
For sponsors, emotionally invested fans are often more valuable than casually engaged ones. They're more receptive to brand partnerships, more likely to participate in activations, and more likely to reward brands that support the teams they care about most.
The Mariners Also Show How Success Can Deepen Fandom
Fresh off a return to postseason relevance and an ALCS run that re-energized the fanbase, the Seattle Mariners also posted gains across multiple measured fan metrics. Intensity increased by 12% where nearly half of engaged fans engaged weekly. Excitement grew by 27%, to where nearly half of engaged fans have a positive emotional sentiment towards the team. Passion rose by 20%, while perhaps most notably, Purchase Consideration climbed to 25%, matching the Seahawks and highlighting how quickly competitive success can translate into commercial opportunity.
Also, the Mariners saw their overall fanbase engagement grow three percent, where they trail just the Seahawks in the state (70% vs 69%).
The Mariners' growth illustrates again how on-field success can reshape fan relationships.
Rather than generating short-term attention, winning helps strengthen emotional connections. Fans became more likely to identify with the team, follow the club closely, and consider a relationship with brands associated with the property.
For sponsors, these are often the most attractive moments in a team's lifecycle. Fan enthusiasm is growing, expectations are high, and the audience remains highly receptive to new partnerships and activations.
Washington Is Becoming an Ecosystem Market
The Seahawks and Mariners may be drivers of conversation in the state, but they aren't alone.
One of the key themes from our broader Washington analysis was the state's growing sports ecosystem and that story has continued to strengthen.
The NHL’s Seattle Kraken improved across Intensity, Momentum, and Passion. The MLS’ Seattle Sounders posted substantial gains in Momentum and Passion, while the WNBA’s Seattle Storm continues to maintain a strong presence in one of the nation's most competitive women's sports markets.
Rather than relying on a single dominant franchise, Washington benefits from multiple properties creating year-round fandom.
This depth allows sponsors to engage audiences through different leagues, demographics, and moments throughout the sports calendar while still remaining inside a single market ecosystem.
The NBA Opportunity Looms
Perhaps the most intriguing signal within the state comes from a league without a local franchise.
NBA fandom in Washington sees over half of the engaged general population engage with the league on a weekly basis, while over a third of those engaged fans see their engagement levels increasing in the next year. Also, a quarter of engaged NBA fans are passionate about the league, and again, one-in-four would consider purchasing a brand, product or service if a brand were to sponsor with the league. Those figures rival or exceed several existing Seattle properties, showing just how fertile the market is for a return of the NBA
While any expansion decision remains uncertain, the data reinforces what many sports observers have suspected for years: basketball's presence in Washington never disappeared.
The legacy of the SuperSonics remains part of the state's sports identity, and fan demand will continue to create opportunity for brands seeking relevance to basketball audiences.
Few markets demonstrate this level of league affinity without a local franchise, suggesting significant upside should the NBA return to Seattle and creating a rare opportunity for brands.
What This Means for Sponsors
Washington's fan story is not only about winning, it’s also about what winning does to fan relationships.
The Seahawks and Mariners demonstrate how championships and playoff success deepen emotional attachment among already committed fans. Together, they show that the greatest value of winning may not be creating new fans but strengthening the connection existing fans already have.
For sponsors, that distinction is critical as Engagement measures attention, but Intensity, Passion, and Consideration measure commitment.
In Washington, those emotional indicators are moving in a positive direction, giving brands an opportunity to align with fanbases that are becoming more valuable, not just more visible.
