Northeast Sports Fanbase Rankings: The States with the Strongest Fanbases

The Northeast sees nearly 90% of its population identify as sports fans, offering brands and teams strong partnership and sponsorship opportunities
The Northeast region in the United States has the largest sports fandom composition in the country, where nearly 90% of the general population identifies as such, according to SponsorPulse’s proprietary consumer database.
Within this region, there are five states that offer brands an opportunity to better align their core targets by matching sports teams who have passionate and loyal fanbases.

Massachusetts
The state of Massachusetts has been synonymous with championship winning teams, where the region has a whopping 13 titles in the last 25 years from the Big 4 Sports Leagues – Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, and New England Patriots – offering themselves to brands a winning culture and association.
It is the only state that is tracked in the Northeast that crosses the 90% fandom threshold, making sports almost synonymous with the general population and near full saturation. It is also only one of two states in the entire country, along with Minnesota, to have that elusive over nine-in-ten composition mark.
In this environment, reach is abundant, but differentiation is scarce. Nearly everyone is already a sports fan, which raises the stakes for sponsors and teams: incremental gains don’t come from broader exposure, but from precision, identifying which fans are most likely to act, switch, or advocate when a brand aligns with a team.
For brands, Massachusetts rewards nuance. The winning strategies are not always the loudest or largest, but the most targeted, those that convert ingrained loyalty into measurable impact.
Saturation shifts the game from awareness to influence. Brands that lack fan‑level intelligence risk paying premium prices for partnerships that fail to move behaviour, and teams can miss out on partnering with the right brand. New York
Much like the state of Massachusetts, New Yorkers are deeply passionate and possess a deep emotional attachment to their local sports teams where half of fans are engaging on a weekly basis. This makes fans primed to be intercepted by sponsors as they follow along on their sports fandom journey.
With multiple fanbases coexisting in the same market, this complexity is both an asset and a liability. While New York delivers reach few markets can rival, not all fandom is equal. Intent, emotional attachment, and cultural relevance vary dramatically from team to team, even within the same league.
Brands that succeed in New York embrace complexity rather than fight it, using precision to navigate overlapping fanbases and identify where passion and purchase intent intersect.

Pennsylvania
No state in the Northeast that SponsorPulse tracks has seen its region’s sports fandom grow at a greater rate than those who live in Pennsylvania, where it saw double digit growth (10.2%) from 2022 to 2025.
This surge is in part driven by the Philadelphia Eagles winning the 2024 Super Bowl with Jalen Hurts, creating a halo effect of a recent championship run. Also, the Philadelphia Phillies have become a perennial playoff contender with All-Star Bryce Harper, making the playoffs the last four seasons, including a World Series in 2022. The Pittsburgh Penguins, led by franchise icons Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, have made the playoffs 17 times in the last 20 years, winning three Stanley Cups and creating fan loyalty that seemingly stands the test of time.
The NFL scores the highest in the state, as the Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers are the top two most engaged with franchises, leaning on their recent success (Eagles) and historic performances (Steelers). The Steelers also are tied with the Patriots for most Super Bowl titles in league history, cementing themselves as a franchise standard.

For sponsors, Pennsylvania offers durability. Partnerships aligned with the right properties can benefit from both short-term momentum and long-term fan commitment.
While championships amplify engagement, much of Pennsylvania’s fandom existed long before recent title runs. Brands focused only on momentum risk overlooking the deeper loyalty that sustains value when performance evens out.
SponsorPulse can help brands to track post-championship engagement lift and identify which partnerships generate lasting value beyond the title run. For teams, SponsorPulse can provide a fair market valuation on what their assets are worth, ensuring historic engagement and momentum surges are properly captured.
New Jersey
The state of New Jersey provides a unique opportunity for brands as there is strong spillover between the Garden State and New York, as many teams that contain the New York name, actually call New Jersey home.
The New York Giants are the most engaged with team in the state, which isn’t surprising as the Giants’ stadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey. As well the NWSL team NJ/NY Gotham also play in New Jersey.

What distinguishes New Jersey is cross state fandom can become fragmented. Treating it only as an extension of New York leads to missed targeting opportunities where fan engagement behaves differently, and often more predictably.
By mapping fandom behaviour beyond state lines, SponsorPulse provides brands and teams opportunities to unlock hidden engagement pockets that traditional market definitions often miss.
Connecticut
Much like New Jersey and its relationship with New York, the New England region sees spillover from states that make up the area.
However, in Connecticut specifically, the University of Connecticut Huskies reign supreme in terms of engagement, with well over-half of the general state population engaging with the school. This is thanks in large part to their 18 national championships between the men’s and women’s basketball programs, most recently back-to-back in 2023 and 2024 for the men and 2025 for the women.

Next, we see the pull Massachusetts teams, mainly in the Boston area, have with those from Connecticut.
What will be interesting in Connecticut is the change in engagement once the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun relocates to Houston in 2027, removing the only major professional sporting team in the state.
Saturated, not stagnant
The Northeast remains the most established sports fandom region in the United States, with nearly nine-in-ten residents identifying as sports fans. Unlike high-growth markets, the region’s value lies in emotional depth, generational loyalty, and cultural stability rather than expansion.
Anchored by iconic franchises, historic rivalries, and championship pedigrees across every major league, fandom in the Northeast is deeply woven into identity. That level of saturation creates both opportunity and challenge for brands and teams: reach is abundant, but impact is not guaranteed.
Success in this market hinges on precision. Broad sponsorship plays struggle to stand out in an environment where nearly everyone is already a fan. Brands and teams that win together in the Northeast move beyond visibility, aligning with the right partnerships, moments, and fan segments to translate loyalty into meaningful action.
